What is Vacuum Forming?
Vacuum forming is a manufacturing process used to fabricate plastic parts using heat and vacuum. It is a versatile technology, used both in the production of simple and complex parts in a variety of shapes.
It is a production technology widely used for the fabrication of parts and components for various industries ranging from transportation to food and packaging.
In addition, the flexibility of the process means that it can be adapted to market changes and product trends without requiring large investments in infrastructure.

Vacuum Forming
How does it works?
The Vacuum Forming process is carried out in several stages that, when combined, allow a plastic sheet to be transformed into a final part.
Mold Manufacturing
The mould is manufactured from aluminium or any high temperature resistant material using a CAD-CAM process, which allows dimensional stability and an excellent surface finish to be maintained; in addition, a tool life, allows the manufacture of pre-series of up to 5K pieces.
Material Preparation
Sheet Selection: A plastic sheet (usually thermoplastic), of a suitable thickness and technical properties is chosen to meet final product´s requirements whether it be strength, transparency, flexibility, etc.
Sheet Clamping: The plastic sheet is supported on a clamping frame, which will keep it fixed while it is heated and moulded. This frame can be adjustable according to the sheet size.
Sheet Heating
Heat Application: The sheet is heated until it becomes malleable. This heat can come from electrical resistors, infrared or other sources, and is applied evenly across the whole area to prevent deformations.
Temperature Control: It is crucial to keep the sheet at a specific temperature that allows moulding without burning or melting the plastic. Each type of plastic has an optimal temperature range for thermoforming.
Vacuum Moulding
Placement on the mould: Once hot, the plastic sheet is placed over the mould. The mould can be positive male, (replicating the desired shape in raised form) or negative female (replicating the desired shape in recessed form).
Vacuum Application: Suction is applied by a vacuum pump extracting the air between the sheet and the mould. This allows the plastic to stick firmly to the surface of the mould, taking its shape.
Cooling and Demoulding
Controlled cooling: For the sheet to keep the shape of the mould, it must be allowed to cool down for a few seconds. Sometimes compressed air or cooling systems are used to speed up this process.
Demoulding: Once the plastic has cooled down, it is removed from the mould. This is done carefully to avoid damage to the part and the mould.
Trimming
Moulded parts always have excess material around the edges. This excess is trimmed off to obtain the final shape of the part. This can be done either using hand tools or CNC Machining.
Finishing
Depending on technical requirements, secondary operations ca be implemented to make sure part is completed; such operations could range from post-machining, surface finish, paint, graphic work to any other specific kind of post-treatment.
Applications of Vacuum Forming
Vacuum Forming technology is ideal for a wide variety of industries:
- Food Industry: Plastic food containers and trays, such as blister packs and general packaging
- Automotive Industry: Interior car parts, such as door panels, instrument panels and consoles, as well as mirror covers and other exterior accessories such as trunks linings, wheel arch liners and bumpers.
- Advertising & Displays: Signs, stands, point-of-sale displays, and custom signage.
- Medical Industry: Exterior equipment covers, sterile product packaging, such as blister packs for medical instruments and trays for safe storage.
- Electronics: Device cases, such as controller boxes and component protectors.
Baths & Spas: Shower liners and trays, bathtubs, hot tubs, SPAs

Advantages
Some advantages of Vacuum Forming are:
- Economy: Compared to other methods such as plastic injection, it is less expensive in terms of molds and equipment.
- Speedy production: Production cycles are fast, especially in medium or large series.
- Versatility: It allows the manufacture of parts of various sizes, from small containers to large-format cases
- Flexibility in materials: It is compatible with various types of thermoplastics, something which allows choosing materials according to technical requirements, such as impact resistance, transparency, among others
- Recycling: Thermoplastic plastics used in vacuum thermoforming can be recycled. Leftover scrap and discarded material from the process can be recovered and reused, minimizing waste.
- Lower carbon footprint: Due to its lower energy consumption compared to other molding processes and its compatibility with recyclable materials, Vacuum Thermoforming contributes to reducing the carbon footprint in the production of plastic parts.
Considerations
Some considerations regarding Vacuum Forming:
- Less detail than other processes: It is not ideal for parts with complex details or very precise tolerances, compared to injection moulding.
- Material waste: The technique can generate plastic scrap that, even though recyclable, it is waste that must be properly managed.
- Cost for small series: Even though it is an economic process for large production runs, it may not be the case when it comes to small series.
FAQs – Vacuum Forming & Thermoforming Manufacturing Insights
- What is vacuum forming in industrial manufacturing?
Vacuum forming is a thermoforming process where a heated plastic sheet is shaped over a mould using vacuum pressure to create plastic parts and components. - What types of parts can be produced with vacuum forming?

Delivery Times in Spain:
Vacuum forming is a manufacturing technique in which a plastic sheet is heated and formed over a mold using vacuum. It is an efficient solution for producing large or simple geometry parts in small to medium batches, with relatively short production times.
The delivery time for vacuum-formed parts depends on whether a mold is already available, the design complexity, production volume, and required finishes.
Factors affecting lead time include:
- Need to manufacture a mold
- Part complexity and size
- Type of plastic and its availability
- Quantity of units requested
- Post-processing (trimming, finishing, assembly, painting)
If a new mold is required, total lead time can range from 2 to 4 weeks. Once the mold is ready, part production can typically be completed within 3 to 7 days, depending on quantity and additional requirements.
An initial sample is usually produced for validation, which may add a few days to the total lead time if adjustments are required.
For urgent deliveries, we can explore options to shorten lead times in certain phases of the process.
Deliveries to Canary Islands, Balearics, Ceuta & Melilla:
Shipments to these regions may require 1-5 additional business days due to logistics and (for Canary Islands) customs processing.
International Deliveries:
Orders outside Spain require extended lead times. Additional delivery time varies by destination country and local logistics/customs factors.
For precise international delivery estimates, contact our customer service team.
